Reply to mostlymonstrous (02/03/2009 20:55:5 What is the appeal of 'the tribulation'? What drives people to fantasize about the suffering of billions of people by creatively twisted, dark and sick means at the hands of a good and loving god? Furthermore, why would anyone want to? Why go into physcial detail about the physical sensation of pain that is supposed to happen during the tribulation period? Why do people want to see the world end during their life time? What does one gain through all of this (personally/on behalf of groups that believe in this)?
Because its 'thrilling'....powerful....something of a 'drama' for the sad fucks to think about while they go about their superior yet fearful and insecure lives. To be thought that 'YOUR' church ...YOu can be seen as part of the "Chosen FEW" is powerful - it gives meaning to the mundane. Its seen as a reward ...to think of yourself that way? That the 'faithful' can escape 'death'. (Crazy isn't it.) The allure of feeling 'special'. Its an ANSWER! And that is better than NOT having one. (some people can't handle that) A lot of people - christians have made a lot of money pushing this particular 'dogma' - it gives reason for spending so much time and effort doing the 'christian' thing - worshipping and acting like a 'christian' - that gives people an identity - self esteem and position in society where other wise much is lacking. People / christians feel as if they are 'right' doing what they do and belonging to a social club/community/church. And that gives the individual stuff to do ...social contacts - a past time. On a political level...the dogma is very handy to the chrisitan leaders. Gives reasons for world domination and justifies the "rightful" group ie. Christian America to rip off the rest of the globe to secure all that it needs Plus more. It also plays a part in the lack of decent Policy - environmental etc. I think also this kind of thought patterning is linked to some mental illnessess and where would a typical congregation be without a huge reliance on 'sickness' - vulnerablities and fear. But I bet all that ain't news to anyone. Btw...I don't this is kind of godma is typicall of just 'fundies' - its part of christianity.
-------------------------------------------------------------- In exchange for obedience, Christianity promises salvation in an afterlife; but in order to elicit obedience through this promise, Christianity must convince people that they need salvation, that there is something to be saved from. Christianity has nothing to offer a happy person living in a natural, intelligible universe. If Christianity is to gain a motivational foothold, it must declare war on earthly pleasure and happiness, and this, historically, has been its precise course of action. In the eyes of Christianity, woman(man) is sinful and helpless in the face of God, and is potential fuel for the flames of hell. Just as Christianity must destroy reason before it can introduce faith, so it must destroy happiness before it can introduce salvation.
