I just saw that snakechick just changed her (I assume it is a "her" anyway) avatar from a copulating couple to a (slightly less pornographic) animated gif of a blond pulling down her pants and showing her g-stringed bottom. I suppose the former avatar of a masterbating Jesus was worse - relatively speaking.
In any case I suspect it is time to post some basic policies that include what kinds of avatars are unacceptable for the good of our community. I'm sure open for suggestions, guys. Any thoughts on avatar policing???

I assume you may be talking about the blond with the g-string - which is actually more entertaining - and greatly less provocative - than the former copulating couple. SO the avatar line "taste" line was crossed, but seems to have been crossed back from. Panties in public are not nearly so bad as copulating in public (to most folks). Question is: where DO we draw the line? Awaiting input.......

Another wrinkle - I just realized that there are at least two different members involved here with almost the same name. One has a copulating couple and the OTHER one has the g-string girl (these two members are from Greece and the Ukraine respectively for what its worth):

Did either of you guys see this picture she posted in the Humor Therapy room? It really is pornographic. I guess we're going to have to lay down the law and put an end to this. We do want to make Walk Away a place where teenagers can hang out also.
I also checked the member list and found there are two "snakechick" user IDs. One has the "k" on the end; the other ends at the "c". There aren't any I was able to find with an embedded space. It is the "snakechick" ID that does have the copulating couple. I vote we should ask this person to change their Avatar. This does bring up the old problem of posting pictures with nudity, however, and I remember Dok getting upset because I asked him to tone things down. It's the age old problem of "what is obscene?"

Anyway, all joking aside, I'd just as soon participants not have sexually graphic avatars of any sort, even the blonde. But some people come here because they are trying to express themselves beyond repression they'd experienced before, so I think we ought to let some of it slide. But overtly pornographic stuff is a bit over the top.

I had an error in the HTML in my post. I've fixed it now. Drummond is right about this being a place where people can cut loose from their repressive pasts. That's one reason why I try to be as uncensorial as possible.
Snakechick has sent me quite a few PMs in the last severl weeks because we have similar issues (Ex-SDA, overbearing mothers, distant fathers) and have had some pretty good conversations. The reason she sent me PMs was she is sure some members of her former cult have followed her here, and didn't want everything she had to talk about out in the open for them to see. She also has had a bitter experience on another forum where the owner did som nasty things to her. To make things worse, the forum was supposed to be for the purpose of people trying to get out of her cult. In other words the place where she went to recover from abuse abused her.
We need to take these things into consideration as we deal with her.

I have contacted Snakechick about her avatar, on Friday but she has yet to read my message. I suppose I shall wait a few more days before removing her avatar myself. As we introduce our online community (with a new web page) it will be an excellent opportunity to post some forum/community guidelines/policies. Drummond, being a lawyer and all... want to give it a rough draft shot?? We can use it as a start for discussion.

I must revisit this "graphic sensitivity" issue. In realizing that this is supposed to be a support forum for those leaving or trying to leave fundyism, as well as those of us who view this site in public places, I think we need to start being very cognizant of this fact.
Obviously the copulating couple was WAY over the line. And the porn pics that Voltaire pointed out are just as obvious. However, as much as I like to look at it myself, I am uncomfortable with viewing this site - in a public place like the library in which I work - which has an animated blond dropping her knickers and flashing her butt (as in Snake Chic's avatar) . Playful - yes. But, not appropriate for this venue I think.
I just want you two to know. I believe as we move to a more high profile presence with our web community (hopefully soon) we are going to have to start being more prudent. I am sending Snake Chik a request to reconsider his avatar. Please let me know your thoughts. All of this is going to require more

This is my message to snake chic. I suppose we could use it as a basis for a general policy.
Please reconsider your choice of an Avatar. While your explanation of being "playful" is well taken, for reasons stated earlier involving fundys coming here for support to walk away as well as the fact that this forum is viewed in public areas (schools and libraries), we (the mods) believe that these sensibilities should be taken into account. We don't like to censor, but a certain decorum needs to be maintained at least in the support forum of this board. Unfortunately, an avatar goes into EVERY forum. A less provocative avatar would be greatly appreciated. I agree actually, though I like the avatar. My wife thinks it's obnoxious though, and if she feels that way, people of much more conservative sensibilities even more.
I think maybe go public with the discussion and concerns and see if it solves itself on a voluntary basis. But the primary purpose of this forum is to provide support, not make statements against prudishness or censorship. There are plenty other forums for those purposes.
