While Gantry was a faker, he was successful because of the fundy masses who followed him. I've read the book, but haven't seen the 1960 film version.

From Irradiation to sugar coated flakes..........Watched this last week....The Road to Wellville. First time that I can remember hearing the Seven Day Adventists mentioned in a movie.! Its based on the work of Dr. Kellogg who operated a health spa/sanitarium in Battle Creek, Michigan, to which place the rich and puny at the turn of the century could repair to restore their health and vigor. Dr. Kellogg employed a strict vegetarian diet and a number of other interesting therapies, such as radiation and near-electrocution as remedies for obesity.

Battle Creek apparently & to quote 'served as something of a vegetarian command and control center in the war that raged between the propenents of vegetarianism and the carnivore/omnivore camp. On the one side was Dr. Kellogg, proclaiming that foul animal products rotted in the intestines of humans and caused no end of health maladies. At the san, the good doctor treated these ailments variously: milk fasting, enemas, and even surgically removing "kinks" in the bowel that interfered with proper digestion. And let's not forget the aforementioned radiation, which did help weight loss by inducing nausea and destroying appetite, with the small side effect that if carried a bit too far, it would kill you. On the side of the angels (at least from our world view) stood the likes of Vilhjalmur Stefansson, Arctic explorer, friend of the Inuit, who espoused the health and safety of meat eating."
Based on the book by T.C. Boyle's The Road to Wellville. which I'm looking forward to reading.

Dogma is a 1999 comedy film, written and directed by Kevin Smith, who stars in the film along with Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Linda Fiorentino, Alan Rickman, Bud Cort, Salma Hayek, Chris Rock, Jason Lee, Jason Mewes, George Carlin, Janeane Garofalo, and Alanis Morissette.Brian O'Halloran and Jeff Anderson, the stars of Smith's debut film Clerks, have cameo roles, as do Smith regulars Scott Mosier, Dwight Ewell, Walt Flanagan and Bryan Johnson.

Two fallen angels - Bartleby (Affleck), who is a Grigori, and Loki (Damon), formerly the Angel of Death, were banished by God to spend all eternity in a place worse than Hell (namely Wisconsin) after Loki, who'd just slaughtered the first born in Egypt (The Tenth Plague), had gotten drunk and was convinced by Bartleby to resign as the Angel of Death. He renounced God and left Heaven, flipping Him off on the way out, thus costing their entitlement to eternal paradise; they were condemned not to go to hell, but to spend eternity outside of Heaven's gates.

Azrael (Lee), a demon (and fallen muse) with a hidden agenda, secretly sends the duo a newspaper article about a church in New Jersey where a Cardinal (Carlin) has declared a blanket amnesty in the form of a plenary indulgence (a perennial misunderstanding of the term) and initiated a contemporary Catholic image campaign--"Catholicism Wow!" with the 'happier' savior: Buddy Christ! --in celebration of the centennial anniversary of his church. This blanket forgiveness would allow Bartleby and Loki to be removed of all sin and allow them entry into Heaven

"Saved" movie -- about a high school in which the self-righteous fundies seem to always have their way until some kids challenge them.
Best scene in the movie -- Mandy Moore, as the "religious bitch" throws a Bible at a girl who was pregnant out of wedlock. The girl picks up the Bible, puts it back in Moore's character's face, and says, "THIS IS NOT A WEAPON!"
