In exchange for obedience, Christianity promises salvation in an afterlife; but in order to elicit obedience through this promise, Christianity must convince people that they need salvation, that there is something to be saved from. Christianity has nothing to offer a happy person living in a natural, intelligible universe. If Christianity is to gain a motivational foothold, it must declare war on earthly pleasure and happiness, and this, historically, has been its precise course of action. In the eyes of Christianity, woman(man) is sinful and helpless in the face of God, and is potential fuel for the flames of hell. Just as Christianity must destroy reason before it can introduce faith, so it must destroy happiness before it can introduce salvation.

HaHa! it so racist too........watch out for that devil music!  Yeah Its a classic for sure. Stuff like that..the way dogma is invented by various christian denominations/leaders/individuals/families... that leads to a heap of unnecessary guilt .......paranoia ....hate....fear..etc..really is a good example of that religion is nothing but a human construct - Imaginary, (crazy pentecostals don't mine a bit of a bop in church) I used the insert function (symbol on second line next to the yellow smiley)  .

Well, maybe just a nibble. If He is truly benevolent then I'm sure He'd understand...

--Psalm 37:23-24, NIV. I've always liked Psalm 121. I like the idea of a God who cares about my existance and goes a step further to protect me. But where was he when the church was at its cruelest? I was left to fend for myself with the abuse. I kept calling upon all of the verses that said 'I will not leave you or forsake you'. Always hoping. But he wouldn't. But where did he go? If God is benevolent then where has He been? Too busy blessing the fundamentalist churches for exploiting people, brainwashing, harassing people into lives of constant fear and guilt? So does that make God a god of the fundamentalist church? Aparently he is not the God of those who stand up for themselves and/or others and love others for who they are and not what their pastors/decons think they should be. If He was then cruelty wouldn't prevail. Or maybe God likes to watch people suffer. Likes to watch them come undone. Do all the churches that are not as legalistic and fundamentalist get spit out for being lukewarm? Do those people who believe in the love of Christ and try to emulate that go to Hell because they do not center their lives around preaching about Hell-fire- then revel at the thought of others suffering for eternity (or during their mortal years for that matter)? Why the fuck would a loving God create Hell?

Thanks for pointing out Psalm 121--I wasn't familiar with it; it's beautiful!
Interestingly, in the New International Version, the heading for that chapter says: "A Song of Ascents." Of course, an ascent is an upward slope or incline, and a person who ascends is a person who moves upward. The Ascension was the bodily ascent of Christ into heaven. So, the 121st psalm is a song that shows you how to rise and move upward. It helps you follow Jesus--see? If you're going to be where He is at, you have to move upward--not downward.
The LORD will keep you from all harm - He will watch over your life; the LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore. --Psalm 121:7-8, NIV.
I've been exactly where you are right now, Kitty. God doesn't like to watch people suffer. God is still there for you, waiting for you to come back to Him. If you run too far from Him, you won't be able to hear His voice and He won't be able to protect you. Jesus is Shepherd over a flock of sheep--not goats. We all choose whether we want to be a sheep or a goat. Harm can come to you if you don't make the right decisions--I am speaking from experience. Jesus will keep you from coming undone if you stay close to Him.
I don't blame you for leaving a church where the pastor wants everyone to center their lives around his preaching about hellfire. Also, it's your duty to run from legalism, exploitation, brainwashing, harassment, and constant fear & guilt. God doesn't want you to be in that kind of environment. Instead of running away from everything, why don't you try running straight for God? He's waiting to help you find a new church home.
