_Misqouting Jesus_ is an excellent book by a very intelligent scholar named Bart Ehrman. The story of his journey out of fundamentalism is in the introduction. He went to Moody Bible College and then on to Princeton Seminary where he took up (gulp!) Textual Criticism.Oops. Not the field of study for a believer in inerrancy. He subsequently became an agnostic. I've heard him speak and sometimes the anger really shows through. So now this bright man with a Ph.D from Princeton is the chair of the religious dept. at University of North Carolina. I guess he figures he has the knowledge why not use it?I've heard that when he teaches undergraduates, he will hold up a Bible and say, "How many of you think this is the Word of God?" Then he will say, "How many of you read it everyday?" A lot of hands go down, of course, and he makes the point of how people who really believe they had the actual Word of God would probably be reading it a lot more.Anyway the book is easy to read, yet scholarly, and has very good arguments for why a lot of what we have in the Bible is not really accurate, etc. A lot of good arguments for fundie family and friends.Debbie

I just bought htis book. Not only was Ehrman on The Colbert Report, he also admitted my best friend into the PhD program at UNC.

So far, I've read the Introduction and the begining of the first chapter. Seems like good stuff. And definetly written for the lay person to understand.

I saw him on the "Colbert Report" too. Another soon-to-be classic that I will get to reading sometime this summer. It's hilarious how these fundies claim that the Bible is "objective" and anyone who does not follow it word by word is "subjective", especially when Paul himself admitted that what he was wrirting were merely his own opinions.

"I"m not a witch, but I wish I was. If I live I"d be a witch now after what they have done. I"ll burn their crops and kill their animals. I"ll stir up such storms. I"ll scatter their ships across the world. If I could meet with the devil right now, I would give him anything for power, for he is the only way to power for women in this world. I shouldn"t have been afraid of Ellen, I should have learnt. Oh, if I only had magic, I"d make them feel it."
