Sorry, just saw this.

I LOOOOVE Jesus Camp! I wrote a review of it in my livejournal; I'll copy and paste it here.

This documentary looks at children who attend a Pentecostal camp in North Dakota, and the woman who runs it. She wants to create "kids as willing to die for the gospel as [Muslim suicide bombers]". The kids they profile are a 13 year old boy who wants to become a preacher, a 12 year old dancer who's concerned that she dances for the flesh and not for God, and a 10 year old girl who evangelizes people on the street and in the bowling alley every chance she gets, complete with Jack Chick tracts (this really creeped me out, and reminded me very strongly of some kids I knew in HS). The documentary also briefly touches on the relationship that megachurches have with Pres. Bush, by way of the 13 year old's visit to Ted Haggard's church. If any of you watch the Daily Show, you probably saw the infamous clip of Haggard (who was recently outed as having an affair with a male prostitute) leaning into the camera and saying, "I know what you did last night. Pay me $2,000 and I won't tell your wife." That clip is from this movie, during a sermon condemning homosexuality...at least he tried it before condemning it. The film is even-handed, and you never seen an interviewer or a director. You simply see the daily life of these kids, and learn how the more fundamentalist elements of Christianity are taught to children. It's fascinating, and I think that even the people I grew up with would find some of these parents extreme.

"Perhaps we should focus on the positive aspect of video games. For example, children can pick up real world experience in the event that the earth is taken over by monsters and the only thing that can save humanity is magical swords, rocks, and...playing cards."

Good day to all from Pheba:  Well I splurged and purchased Jesus Camp.  This is the creepiest film that I have ever seen.

I highly reccomend it.  I read the book "Jesus Doesn't Live Here Anymore", and was totally freaked out when the author described the plans of the fundies to infiltrate government beginning with school boards and working their way up.

Well that is exactly what they have done, and their power just keeps growing.  I highly reccomend Jesus Camp.

The documentary is chilling because the authors did not inject their own opinion into the film.  The film is not filled with interviews of professionals spouting facts, etc.  Just 3 kids who go to Jesus Camp, and some Air America thrown in for contrast.

Absolutely chilling film.

Pheba.

Media attention leads leader of 'Jesus Camp' to relocate

A woman whose summer camp for children near Devils Lake was featured in a documentary called "Jesus Camp," says all the attention led her to decide not to continue camps there.

"I have a responsibility to keep the children safe," the Rev. Becky Fischer said.

Fischer said the camp, which is owned by the Assemblies of God and rents to a number of groups, was vandalized after the release of the movie about her Kids On Fire camp. The Assemblies of God church was also vandalized, she said.

The camp's windows were broken and it had about $1,500 worth of damage. Police figure the church was vandalized the same night, said the Rev. Winston Titus, the camp administrator.

Critics have accused Fischer of brainwashing. She has said she wants to encourage young people to be committed Christians.

Titus said his staff has had calls from both sides- some threatening a boycott if the camp continues renting to Fischer's group, and others threatening a boycott if it does not.

"Right now, we just want it to be over," Titus said. "Any publicity just stirs things up." Fischer has asked that Magnolia Pictures not release the Jesus Camp movie in the Bismarck area because she worries aboutt he risk of other incidents there.

She said the movie is scheduled Nov. 17 in the Fargo Theatre and will be out on DVD in a couple of months.

"Little ever changes when you view it from the sky- and the damage we encounter, earth just passes by. Little ever changes, if anything at all, just reminds ourselves how small we are."

In exchange for obedience, Christianity promises salvation in an afterlife; but in order to elicit obedience through this promise, Christianity must convince people that they need salvation, that there is something to be saved from. Christianity has nothing to offer a happy person living in a natural, intelligible universe. If Christianity is to gain a motivational foothold, it must declare war on earthly pleasure and happiness, and this, historically, has been its precise course of action. In the eyes of Christianity, woman(man) is sinful and helpless in the face of God, and is potential fuel for the flames of hell. Just as Christianity must destroy reason before it can introduce faith, so it must destroy happiness before it can introduce salvation.

I believe it should be a law throughout the world that teaching any child any religion should be a form of child abuse. I watched this disgusting display of blatant mind control and brainwashing of innocent children and frankly I wanted to slap that  obnoxious woman who thought this insane idea up. Have the people in this country lost their minds?!

I guess its some years down the track now...since the movie was first released but I'm happy to report that its being played on Australian Pay Teevee.

(might put a few people off from taking their kids to christian camp without THINKING about it first.

*shrugs*...don't know??
