'lo! i'm a 22 y/o college grad who's still struggling with coming away from fundamentalism. i was raised Southern Baptist and went to an Independent Baptist HS but once i went to my "evil" public university i started to come away from it w/o the hate i had been accumulating in HS due to having it slammed down my thoat all the time. Being away from fundamentalism isn't so bad except when i go home (like on the holiday) and i hear things said like "We should kill all the Muslims. God killed men women and children in the Bible so we should kill the infidel too." I've been very good at staying away from my previous conservative convictions but in the back of my head there's always the lingering guilt that because of my life choices i am completely evil and need to go back to church or everyone's going to hate me and that i'm a failure because i'm not some hardcore fundie. i also keep getting "Your friends dont tell you the truth--only your family and people at church do and anyone who says that we're wrong is going to hell. Your friends are going to hell because of you since you don't witness to them--but they're evil and should go. They make you do bad things because you were never like this before you met them." Because i'm not allowed to change my mind adn the act of my changing mind is influence of other people--not decisions i make for myself. Gah! Sorry about the rant.Currently i'm getting into Gnosticism and find it to be much more accepting and encompassing of the beliefs i've formed throughout my life (kept secret from family, of course).Just sayin' hi! Sorry if the happy face seems out of place but i have a tendency to try and remain laid back, no matter how upset i get.

Welcome to the forum!    We need your happy face around here.    I have a brother who's conservative Baptist, and some of things he says scares me!  You made a point about not being allowed to change your mind.  This worries the fundies because if someone who was once a fundy can change, that means that they could change too...which is a red alert to them.  Change is only good if it leads to their narrow thinking patterns; bad if it leads to the freedom of independent thought.  Enjoy your freedom!

Hiya nice to meet you and Pull a pew

The old 'guilt trip' - man i'd like a $ for everytime I've heard that one. That's a standard reply for a fundy to give anyone who questions or who dares to look outside of the group for information.  Do you think it's cos they are threatened by your non conformingness (crap speller -  I too will go to hell)  Ah enjoy your differences from your family soon you will be your own person living life the way you choose and not needing to hide what you read.

Enjoy!

In exchange for obedience, Christianity promises salvation in an afterlife; but in order to elicit obedience through this promise, Christianity must convince people that they need salvation, that there is something to be saved from. Christianity has nothing to offer a happy person living in a natural, intelligible universe. If Christianity is to gain a motivational foothold, it must declare war on earthly pleasure and happiness, and this, historically, has been its precise course of action. In the eyes of Christianity, woman(man) is sinful and helpless in the face of God, and is potential fuel for the flames of hell. Just as Christianity must destroy reason before it can introduce faith, so it must destroy happiness before it can introduce salvation.

consider the extent to which this resembles brainwashing.

that helped me in ascertaining the (non)sense of the double-bind propositions the church and my family offered me.

anyway hi! I was raised southern baptist too. I'm some sort of esoteric buddhist heretic now. to the extent that I am anything at all. the preacher voices and mom still haunt me sometimes. I hope you find your way out or over or wherever you want to go unscathed. if you can remain confident that you are competent to make your own choices then you will be doing better than I sometimes have done.

This much Kafka was absolutely sure of: First, that someone must be a fool if he is to help; second, that only a fool's help is real help. The only uncertain thing is: can such help still do a human being any good? It is more likely to help the angels who could do without help. Thus as Kafka puts it, there is an infinite amount of hope, but not for us.
