I hope I can be helpful and learn more through this forum and its members.
Welcome! Welcome! Welcome!
Oh yes please! Stick around - its a great forum. Sorry I haven't said anything more personal. Your intro is very powerful and would require a lot more thought than I'm able to give right now.....but yes I also 'suffered' as a kid for not being one of the crowd - swallowing all that garbage hook line and sinker.
seeya later....

In exchange for obedience, Christianity promises salvation in an afterlife; but in order to elicit obedience through this promise, Christianity must convince people that they need salvation, that there is something to be saved from. Christianity has nothing to offer a happy person living in a natural, intelligible universe. If Christianity is to gain a motivational foothold, it must declare war on earthly pleasure and happiness, and this, historically, has been its precise course of action. In the eyes of Christianity, woman(man) is sinful and helpless in the face of God, and is potential fuel for the flames of hell. Just as Christianity must destroy reason before it can introduce faith, so it must destroy happiness before it can introduce salvation.

Welcome to Walk Away! I was part of a once saved, always saved group and have also found that part changes to meet their own convenience. It would be funny I guess, if it wasn't so sad. You sound like a real survivor! Things have gotten progressively better for me (I am also a 40-something) and hope the same for you. I look forward to more of your posts. This is a great place to vent.

Wow, what a story! Not only abused by fundamentalists, but the psychiatric profession as well. I hope you can find help and support here for what you've gone through. It must be difficult to have lost your entire family over this, but one thing you might consider: if their love is so easily thwarted by your deconversion, then was it really love in the first place? I've had some of the same kinds of problems you have and that is the way I think of it: do they love me or my religion?
This new rule has caused me to think again on the methods of this cult, which is rampant in our country and, I feel ,dangerous.
I think you've identified them quite well; that's one characteristic of a cult: the rules are arbitrary and change constantly. This is because they don't want to say what they really want, which is for you to just give in and be like them.

Zombies, Unicorns, Devils, Sea Monsters, Satyrs, Dragons, Six Winged Angels, Gods, Demons, Witches, Astrologers, A walking & talking snake, Magical fruit, Talking donkeys, human headed six-winged beasts, Ghosts. All that stuff is in the Bible and yet they tell me it"s not mythology?

I look back on some of the things I've overcome in my life and feel okay about who I am today. I've been described more than once by people who know me as "indomitable," "brutally honest," and recently someone said when he thinks of me he thinks of "intelligent strength." The friends I have are good ones, and I find I can make my own family no matter where in the world I go. The only problem is going back home, like recently, for a funeral. I find myself feeling pretty depressed, and can't quite put my finger on why, a week later after seeing them all. This must be why I came to this forum now though, so I look forward to seeing what I will learn here. Thanks very much lovely people.
It is great to have you here.

Spanked in a closet? Disgusting.
I'm glad you've broken free from the shackles that have chased you all your life. I agree that most of our society just accepts ridiculous things as fact. I had an honors student in a public high school ask me a question about Adam and Eve the other day: if they hadn't sinned, would they have lived forever? Um . . .
I mean, really, if we're all going to believe some fanciful fairytale, we could at least pick a better one, right?
Anyway, welcome, and l look forward to reading more of your posts.
