Welcome to Walk Away! I think you'll find yourself some great support here among the "former faithful." I've only been a member for less than a month, but have already found much to help me in adjusting to life without fundamentalism.
...its only just recently that I've decided to find out more. I like research and I like asking questions.
A must for any thinker! That's what brought you out of restrictive thinking. The "Truth" won't set you free, but the right questions will! Feel free to post whatever issues/questions/rants you may have; we are all stumbling along together.

Anyway I've found out quite a lot about the group and as I mention at the begining I've been yaking to ex-revivalist and I suspect current member's as well. I happened across this site by accident a few weeks ago and have enjoyed reading here. I think it will be a good outlet for me to express myself and my various emotional states. I've come to a stage right now that I'm quite comfortable - not so angry but hell it was quite a shock to realise that this group is a cult. I think another aspect of my experiences is that I haven't really acknowledged the impact of being brought up an adventist. I'm not religious and feel my heckles rise when i hear or read preaching.
Hi , as an ex-adventist, raised from seven years old in that "cult" and seemingly bound for the ministry at 18, I am thankful a very hot lass changed my perspective. It's taken me a long time since then to - as you say - acknowledge "the impact of being brought up an adventist".
I have been as 'angry as hell' about the things that happened in my youth because of and as a result of the sda's. Anger when properly directed can have a positive impact, however the maxim - don't get angry - get even' is perhaps just as useful. For me, getting even means exposing the ridiculous in the literal interpretations - for example take the 'sabbath'.
Two sda's meet for church on sabbath, they agree that only the righteous who 'keep the sabbath'(whatever that means) will get into heaven. Anyway they both take a trip around the world in opposite directions, both cross the international datelines and one advances a day, and the other goes back one. Seven days later one turns up at an empty church on Friday and the other on Sunday!
How obvious, the principle of one rest day in seven is great, liberating perhaps, but attempting to mandate observance is a futile and puerile act of ignorance that only the brainwashed would accept.
Pleased to 'meet' you snakechick, you may already know there are other ex-sda's here including a section with info just for us organised by Voltaire. Good luck in your journey

Welcome to Walk Away, snakechick. Having had my own brain screwed up with Adventism, I think I know how you feel. After reading your introduction, I'm reminded once again how much I hate all that bullshit I swallowed for 40 years. I hope you've found a place here where your pain can be heard and your healing process can start.
My older sister and I suffered under a strict regime throughout our childhood.
Did you go to Adventist schools like I did? I was in their system all the way through college, except for 1 1/2 years of public high school. I'm still sad that I can't look back and have fond memories of going to school. All those memories are now tainted with the pain that I was being indoctrinated against my will to believe a bunch of crap.
That was about four years ago and yep no sister.
Sorry to hear about the "loss" of your sister, but unfortunately that happens too often with cults.
Is the cult you joined called Revival Centres International? If so, you may be interested to know that the Freedom Of Mind Center has listed them as a cult.
Oh Dear I tried to make it short...
I didn't find your post too long. Besides, Aimoo doesn't charge us extra when we use a lot of space, so post away to your heart's content.

I have lots of memories and one stupid phobia - can't handle steps till this day because of something that happened at the adventist building.
What happened (feel free to ignore this question)
My phobia was dogs! Did you ever have to collect door to door for the 'appeal for missions'? I did and beginning at the tender age of 9 or 10!
One time I entered a property by myself and found nobody home, turning to leave I was confronted by a snarling beast that looked for all the world as though it would kill me. With no one home, no supervisor .... i was on my own, terrified! That experience scarred me for years, and my four year younger brother had a German Sheperd attack him, jumping on to his back!
Imagine that, these paragons of virtue sent two young children, by themselves, door to door, we had shoes thrown at us, drunks abusing us, scorn and derision. For what?
The classic was when we helped build the local sda church. The congregation borrowed money from the sda organisation to build the church, we drove the nails, poured the concrete, worked our butts of to build it, then paid the loan back to the sda church. Guess who owned the building after that?
I've often wondered about something like a class action sue them, confront them as the paedophiles in the RC church are being confronted

My Mom was chased by a wild woman with a broom when she went door to door as a kid for the JW's. She still doesn't clean...could be a connection. Welcome snakechick, too bad about the online sex thing ...................................................................................... (kidding ).
