LONG story short - we got a letter today from my husband's young cousin and her husband asking for donations to support their missions to Italy.GIVE ME A FRIGGIN" BREAK!!They included several statistics in their letter including:95% of Italians are Catholic at 3 months old.5% of that 95% actually GO to church (according to the CIA's statistics and several other sources, it's about 30% - other info I found indicates that only about 20% of American Christians go)only .6% of Italians are evangelical Christians90% of all missionaries return home after 4 years due to the difficulty to reach the people of Italy.I know I don't even have to say all the things I"m thinking right now. You all know. I'm actually getting that anxious short of breath feeling over this. It's all I can do not to e-mail her and tell her what I'm thinking! BUT - as she's dh's cousin, and he still believes, I guess that would be demolishing a few bridges, so I'll keep it to myself. I AM tempted to send their little thing back and inform them that I won't be funding their vacation to Italy. But again - I think that might damage some family ties. What is UP with these people? Why are they so fucking arrogant as to think their religion is the only one? GOod Lord, if 95% of the country is Catholic, then they already KNOW about God! Give me a break!!!LM

Sounds like trying to sell ice to eskimos  The SDA church used to teach that the Roman Catholics were the antichrist and that's most likely where they are at?  That 5% that actually go to church are probably the regulars and having only been to weddings at Catholic churchs I can't really say, but if they're anything like some of their cults with their mindless ritual it would bore a saint to tears

He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest--a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. Tough cheesy nachos. They're not bothered about damaging family ties by scrounging money for a holiday by calling it a "mission". Don't give them a penny. (Unless you want to!)

That's the most amazing thing I've heard - a mission to Italy to convert the ignorant natives. It's a tough job but someone's got to do it I bet. *yawn*

Hey guys - I'm going to the carribean to promote independant thought - want to show your financial support? Send me your cheques - it's all in a good cause.

Oh lsl_mss I've just thought why don't you send a letter back saying "I regret I am unable to contribute financially to your mission but I am sure that if it is God's will, he will provide for you. Love and kisses lsl_mss xx "

I knew you guys would understand!

The more I think about it - the more it aggravates me!!

I'm sorry - WHAT??  You want me to fund your trip to Italy where 95% of the people already believe in God?  EXCUSE ME?

You want me to fund your 8 DAY trip to visit SAM - a missionary who has been there since the 70's with no luck - but you young, inexperienced newlywed lovebirds are going to go over and change the whole of the country in 8 days?  Wait  let me guess - if even ONE soul is brough the the lord then it's worth it.

How many starving kids in the US do you think we could feed with the $5390 you're asking for by MAY18th!?????

It's an 8 day mission?! That is absurd!!!!

That must be proof that "God" only says whatever we make him.

No wonder you're furious! There's no way that's anything other than a holiday. If they want to do fun things on their holidays they should get a better hobby than "church-going". Why should you pay? I can't believe the cheek of that!

Yeah, I've known a few preachers who'd take 1 or 2 week trips to "minister" to people in Europe, the Carribean, and Isreal.  They'd come back all tanned and rested, talking vaguely about what a "blessing" it was and how many lives got touched, but to their friends and intmates, theyd gab mostly about the food and accomodations.Meanwhile the money for the trip had come from the church. I don't care if people wanna take a vacy, but not on my dime.

It used to be that Africa and other "Third World" countries were the mission spots of choice, but not so much now.Places like Italy and France are pretty popular mission these days. Europe is known to be a tough field because people there have a been there done that attitude toward religion, and they don't go in for the fundy stuff. I think American Christians will have try a very different approach over there than what they're familiar with.

Ugh.  It just irritates the living beegeezus out of me.  I was reading the letter again - and it says that they are going to Udine, which is in the northeastern part of Italy right near the Swiss Alps.  Yes - I'm sure there will be no sightseeing at all.

Totally sounds like a vacation to me. I also noticed on this read through that they are going with a "team".  Spare me.

Hey guys - I'm going to the carribean to promote independant thought - want to show your financial support? Send me your cheques - it's all in a good cause.

That's hilarious!  But, basically the same thing.

Yeah - 8 days.  WOO - long stretch of time to be away from home.  I guess part of what is so annoying about it is that her parents have enough money to support ALL of us, but always find some cheesy way to skimp on things and save a buck. (ie reusing/washing plastic silverware at the Christmas Open House that they host every year).

They are SO young - early 20's.  Such a shame to see them so embedded like this.  It isn't even techinically a "fundy" church, I dont' think.  Maybe they all are on some level?

Well, those of you that have read my early posts know that I have a beef with missionaries in general.  Freeloaders.

HEY -WAIT -  How about if I go and spread the word about Walking Away from Fundamentalism and you guys could all send me checks to pay my way? Heck - I could go on the trip to Italy with them and straighten them all out before we get back!

I guess the other thing that bothers me about it is the basic lack of respect for someone else's culture and their beliefs.  Did you ever think that the reason missionaries are unsuccessful over there is because they LIKE being Catholic and it fits into their culture?  GET OVER YOURSELVES!!

I'm betting my inlaws are going to send them money (grrrr)- maybe not - my fil doesn't like her dad all that well (his bro).  Yeah - there's a whole other story.  My inlaws are good church-going, God fearing folks.  My fil (used to be) always harping about how we needed to go to church - making my dh even more upset that we weren't going - making me uncomfortable because I didn't want to go.  Talking about being good Christians and what not.  Then turns around and tells you how much he hates two of his brothers and they aren't welcome in his home, yadda, yadda, yadda.

I guess the other thing is too that I think a lot of Christians do good deeds with good intentions, but they just seem to be completely blind to what is really going on around them!  AND - too arrogant to believe that there is any other way to be that is "right " and will make you "happy".

I will definitely NOT e-mail them.  It would be rude.  For sure.  And dh asked me not to.  (chicken)  I'm sure not sending them any money - ever - I can tell you that right now.

:::sigh:::

Probably your cousin is just looking for an all expenses paid trip to Italy.    I mean, that'd be hard to pass up -- other people feel good about paying you to go to Italy!  Notice how they didn't pick Papau New Guinea as their destination.

I've known people who have gone on missions trips to London, Ireland, Spain, and all sorts of other pleasant first-world European nations.  What caring, giving souls they are, ya know?

If she asks you why you haven't donated, say that you just donated your missions allowance for the year on a missionary going to [remote, 3rd world location where they may actually not have heard of Christianity yet].  Maybe she'll get the hint, but probably not.

Do you even have to give them an answer?  Just ignore the request.  If the couple asks, then you'll have to think of something to say.  How about simply along the lines of "I'm unable to give anything at this time"?

I have a cousin who sponsors missionary/aid trips to South America.  They do some good things, like repairing houses or providing simple medical aid, but the main focus is to spread the gospel.  Note the similarity to your hubby's cousins: both have selected predominately Catholic areas.     My cousin passed out a missionary trip newletter at our last family reunion, no doubt to get new volunteers or more financial support.  In it he told of how they had a Japanese student volunteer go with them and help out.  During the trip, she converted!  So my cousin assisted in corrupting two different cultures at the same time.

Hi guys!

No - I don't have to give an answer at all. Boy - I would LOVE for them to ask why I didn't support their mission!  Would they like the list alphabetically or by order of importance??

They won't ask, I'm sure.

I knew you guys would understand and have similar stories to boot!

I need to learn not to let stuff like that get under my skin.  It's going to happen, you know?  How did folks learn to deal with those sorts of things?

Jo
