Can't say I was ever a big D&D player, but I was into other role playing games. But that's beside the point -- Catholics, even the strict ones, don't take such a rabid view of RPGs as many fundamentalists do.For those of you who have never played or might be a bit freaked out by the idea, get some friends andgive it a try. It's really all in how you play it, but by and large it's no more malignant than something written by Tolkien (after who much of the D&D canon was based) or CS Lewis. If high fantasy settings don't appeal to you, there's the gothic horror of the White Wolf games, the high-tech worlds of BattleTech and Shadowrun, or even the roll-your-own freeform systems like GURPS, FUDGE, and D20.It's all quite a lot of fun. Don't let those big bad fundy bogeymen scare you away...

Speaking of rabid fundamentalists' views, have you seen this:

I just saw it linked through Fark.com (along with this hilarious eBay listing of a man modeling his ex-wife's wedding dress).

That chick tract could be turned around to show fundies at a bible study expecting total commitment from a new member and then rejecting her on a whim and then being too busy to talk to here.  Perhaps Dok could do the honours.

There have been "Dark Dungeons" parodies done, though not quite along those lines (one about being Goth, I believe). Someone actually did something very similar to what you're suggesting to "The Last Generation", though, turning a pseudo-Catholic-theocracy nightmare into something more worthy of A Handmaid's Tale, with domineering fundies instead of "new-age healers".

I just remember Brendan Fraser in Airheads, "I used to be a geek.  I used to play D&D and everything... (*gasps from the crowd)"

Every time you lay off an American worker you also lay off an American consumer.

When you export jobs you also export the ability to pay for goods manufactured for the American market.

I have never played it but would probably enjoy it.  Maybe it wasn't very big in New Zealand where I grew up?

I don't know anyone who'd know how to play it either.  Shame!

I do remember all the talk about how "bad" it was supposed to be and how people had killed themselves over it or something!

Yes I AM too cool for church! Jesus is NOT waaay cool I AM! Am I"m real and he"s NOT SO...!

I used to be into Jesus

But now I"ve kicked the habit

"..When you"re inside the pig, it"s so warm and comfortable and feels wonderful. Then you get out and you realise the hideous monster that"s been accomodating you!" (From a book, talking about during and after bad relationships but SO appropriate here too!)
