RE:Religion is an excuse for drama

Reply to sunspots (04/05/2008 4:26 PM) Thinking seems to zap religion pretty quick...... I used to wonder why people liked to mess things up and create needless strife and aggravation... My ex wife was compelled to inject grief and annoyance into everything.. she came from an affluent background and never had any real difficulties so she had to create scenarios where she could pretend that she was mastering the universe.......and also relieve boredom.
I work at a place full of idiots that really think that klugeing half assed semi fixs for problems is how you do things... no one ever thinks of creating systems so everything is done right the first time because that would spoil all the fun... these people are all alcoholics from dysfunctional backgrounds that like to medicate themselves with adrenaline and mutual masterbate about how great they all handled an awful problem ( usually something that 15 seconds of rational thought could have precluded)... It is incredible to watch!
75% of religion is show biz...... so it has to be drama
Most people need drama and bullshit to keep them from really going kookoo it seems......

I love this reply!! And only one thing to add. Drama - gossip - making a 'mountain out of a mole hill' - treating everything, every problem as if its a 'life or death' situation can be very funny to observe. but its not only the domain of the religious. Adrenaline junkies within religious circles? Seems a bit like a contradiction to me....most of the day to day stuff of being a religious nut is so fucking boring? Give em' the thrill of hell and satan hey? ...or the titillation of committing a secret sin? Heheheh..the thrills you are having when you aren't having any thrills.

In exchange for obedience, Christianity promises salvation in an afterlife; but in order to elicit obedience through this promise, Christianity must convince people that they need salvation, that there is something to be saved from. Christianity has nothing to offer a happy person living in a natural, intelligible universe. If Christianity is to gain a motivational foothold, it must declare war on earthly pleasure and happiness, and this, historically, has been its precise course of action. In the eyes of Christianity, woman(man) is sinful and helpless in the face of God, and is potential fuel for the flames of hell. Just as Christianity must destroy reason before it can introduce faith, so it must destroy happiness before it can introduce salvation.
