Gallery cancels naked chocolate Jesus exhibitNEW YORK - A planned Holy Week exhibition of a nude, anatomically correct chocolate sculpture of Jesus Christ was canceled Friday amid a choir of complaining Catholics that included Cardinal Edward Egan. The "My Sweet Lord" display was shut down by the hotel that houses the Lab Gallery in midtown Manhattan, said Matt Semler, the gallery's creative director. Semler said he submitted his resignation after officials at the Roger Smith Hotel shut down the show. The six-foot sculpture was the victim of "a strong-arming from people who haven't seen the show, seen what we're doing," Semler said. "They jumped to conclusions completely contrary to our intentions."But word of the confectionary Christ infuriated Catholics, including Egan, who described it as "a sickening display."Bill Donohue, head of the watchdog Catholic League, said it was "one of the worst assaults on Christian sensibilities ever.""It's not just the ugliness of the portrayal, but the timing ? to choose Holy Week is astounding," he said. The hotel and the gallery were overrun Thursday with angry phone calls and e-mails about the exhibit. Semler said the calls included death threats over the work of artist Cosimo Cavallaro, who was described as disappointed by the decision to cancel the display."In this situation, the hotel couldn't continue to be supportive because of a fear for their own safety," Semler said. The sculpture was to debut Monday evening, the day after Palm Sunday and just four days before Roman Catholics mark the crucifixion of Jesus Christ on Good Friday. The final day of the exhibit was planned for Easter Sunday. The artwork was created from more than 200 pounds of milk chocolate, and features Christ with his arms outstretched as if on an invisible cross. Unlike the typical religious portrayal of Christ, the Cavallaro creation does not include a loincloth.Cavallaro is best known for his quirky work with food as art: Past efforts include repainting a Manhattan hotel room in melted mozzarella,One day at a time, Sweet JesusSpeaking of appetite, in Pennsylvania, Jesus became the subject of a holy war over candy as chocolate lovers questioned whether they should consume bars featuring the image of the Son of God."I just don't think that you should eat anything that's Jesus," Liz Samuel told theBucks County Courier Times. "It's OK to eat the cross as long as God is not on it."Chocolatier Pamela Roberts told the paper she was reluctant at first to sell "The Last Supper" bars: "Sometimes I think it could be a sacrilege. But the nuns just love them."

More on chocolate... why not?

Fox News were debating--I am not making this up--if the Easter Bunny should have his name changed.

They were also talking about how some people are now getting chocolate crosses in their Easter baskets.

I think the that whole idea of a giant bunny that gives chocolate eggs in the middle of the night is a little...creepy, but do christians really think that when Jesus comes back he'll want to see another cross?

Isn't that about like giving the Kennedy children chocolate sniper rifles?

Actually, from what I've heard the Romans normally did strip naked those who were to be crucified; so Jesus most likely was naked on the cross.  So much for fundy literalism when it comes to nudity.

Mmmmmm, chocolate....now I want some.

Hell..oh' Mothy ...mate!

Ever so funny really.......da idea ...

"But word of the confectionary Christ infuriated Catholics, including Egan, who described it as "a sickening display."

Was that a pun? or a hypo bole...or a reality check?

Eating all that choccy would make anyone 'sick'....but so is  'SWALLOWING'! THE BULLSHIT  of jesus on the cross..bleeding ...dying....& worshipping that kind of SICK imagery is well.....kinda warped.

So....what's next....The "WAR IN CHOCOlate"..............crikey mate! what a load of cods wallop!  That cross is too creepy...but I'd still eat it.!

Seriously.....could we be seeing the creation of new myths.....someday.....rolls forward 2000yrs and jesuschrusty is still not here.....I wonder what kinds of stuff will be 'eaten' at easter?

P.s. ...I like your Andr?Paul Guillaume Gide quote....

"The presence of those seeking the truth is infinitely more preferable to the presence of those who think they've found it. "
---

that's who I'm guessing it is anyway. I think he also said....something like...Don't trust people who claim to have found the truth....but those who seek it? I don't know really....I just like that saying...

Mmmmmm, chocolate....now I want some.

In exchange for obedience, Christianity promises salvation in an afterlife; but in order to elicit obedience through this promise, Christianity must convince people that they need salvation, that there is something to be saved from. Christianity has nothing to offer a happy person living in a natural, intelligible universe. If Christianity is to gain a motivational foothold, it must declare war on earthly pleasure and happiness, and this, historically, has been its precise course of action. In the eyes of Christianity, woman(man) is sinful and helpless in the face of God, and is potential fuel for the flames of hell. Just as Christianity must destroy reason before it can introduce faith, so it must destroy happiness before it can introduce salvation.
