There's all sorts of upsets going on in the election....the Democrats take control of the House, and possibly the Senate (most recent results show two extremely close races with the Dems leading by 1%; if they win Dems will have 52 seats in the Senate), and now, our first Muslim Representative. Are the evangelical/fundies wondering why God has turned His back on them and spurned their prayers? Tee hee!Minnesota Democrat becomes first Muslim to win seat in CongressMINNEAPOLIS: Democrat Keith Ellison was elected as the nation's first Muslim member of Congress on Tuesday, easily winning a Minneapolis-area district Republicans had not carried since 1962.Ellison, who is black, is also Minnesota's first nonwhite representative in Washington. He said those things were only of secondary importance."I think the most important thing about this race is we tried to pull people together on things we all share, things that are important to everyone. We all need peace, and this Iraq policy is dangerous to our country," said Ellison, who has called for immediate withdrawal of U.S. troops.Ellison said his campaign united labor, minority communities, peace activists. "We were able to bring in Muslims, Christians, Jews, Buddhists," he said. "We brought in everybody."Today in AmericasDemocrats take House; Senate hangs on 2 racesGlobalist: Will Bush follow voters with a shift of his own?Mississippi ads fight low self-imageEllison focused on issues that resonate in the urban, liberal-leaning 5th District in Minneapolis. By favoring gay rights and legal abortion, Ellison cut a path away from many Muslims.Hayat Hassan, 30, a single mother and a Muslim, said she voted for Ellison because of his positions on health care and education."I didn't even know he was a Muslim until one of his campaign workers told me," she said. The seat was thrown open when longtime Rep. Martin Sabo said he would retire after 28 years. The Minneapolis-centered district is the most Democratic-leaning in the state; in 2004 seven of 10 voters went for John Kerry for president. That meant the real battle was the September primary, and Ellison, the endorsed Democrat, beat several strong candidates in that race, including Sabo's former chief of staff Mike Erlandson. On Tuesday he beat Republican Alan Fine and the Independence Party's Tammy Lee.Mahdi Bray, executive director of the Muslim American Society, compared an Ellison victory to Edward Brooke's election in 1966 as the first black senator since the 1870s.He said Muslims followed the campaign closely, and that they are more excited about seeing a Muslim in Congress than they are concerned about Ellison's strong liberal views."We are monotheistic, but we are not monolithic. There are things within our own community that we disagree about," he said. Ellison's views "might be a concern but I think the overall factor of having a Muslim voice in Congress overrides those types of concerns."Ellison's campaign had to deal with reports of overdue parking tickets, late campaign finance reports and unpaid taxes. He also faced questions about anti-Semitism because of past ties with the Nation of Islam, a black Muslim group led by the confrontational Louis Farrakhan.Ellison, a criminal defense attorney who converted to Islam as a college student, denounced Farrakhan, and he won the endorsement of a Minneapolis Jewish newspaper.

Yeah heard that on the news. I did take a step back when I heard it myself - Great stuff.! Heheehee....

Last I heard was the Chenney would have the casting vote in the senate - damn it... if its true.

oh yeah...and the report here...also described the Democrates as having to shift to the centre - or become more 'right' in order to gain votes. *shrugs*

If that's true...then it sounds similar to whats happened here.......the conservatives becoming more conservative & the 'liberal's' becoming more conservative.

Oh HUm...

In exchange for obedience, Christianity promises salvation in an afterlife; but in order to elicit obedience through this promise, Christianity must convince people that they need salvation, that there is something to be saved from. Christianity has nothing to offer a happy person living in a natural, intelligible universe. If Christianity is to gain a motivational foothold, it must declare war on earthly pleasure and happiness, and this, historically, has been its precise course of action. In the eyes of Christianity, woman(man) is sinful and helpless in the face of God, and is potential fuel for the flames of hell. Just as Christianity must destroy reason before it can introduce faith, so it must destroy happiness before it can introduce salvation.

This is what I've heard from some sources, but others claim that we are at the brink of a new progressive era.  Have to wait and see...better yet, start bugging my new representative to keep him on track.

Yeah.....I'm enjoying watching PM John HOward squirm as he replies to questions Re: the war in Iraq - he can't deny the  of rercussions of the Democrates taking control of both houses   - (COngrats to the US btw - yippeeee!).........hope  the US succeeds in its plans to change course.

Silly Howard is still maintaining the 'bush' line.....of 'victory' and all that bullcrap....

Also.......I'm as frustrated with our so called 'liberal' type leaders.......forfucks sake we are in one of the worst droughts since Federation and the Top dude organised a fucking 'pray' for rain meeting last week.

Its so silly.......what about 'planning' a water pipe or recycling waste water.?

sheesh.....
