I'm curious to know how many people here drink caffeine - i.e. tea or coffee and how do you feel about it? I give up caffeine every now and again and I feel loads better for it. But mmmmm.... coffee it tastes so good... so, you know, I end up in the situation where someone says to me - "do you want a coffee?" and I can't bring myself to say "oh do you have any herbal tea?" (because I feel pretentious or wimpy) or "no thanks" (because it seems anti-social) so I just say "yeah great - thanks!" And that one cup mmm... that lovely first cup - it makes me want more cups and before I know it I can't function before that first cup of coffee in the morning, I'm drinking more than half a dozen a day and I'm so jittery I'm biting the heads off anyone who talks to me. So then I realise I have a problem and I quit. Ahhh the agony. Ohhh the headaches and the mood swings. But then they go away and I think to myself "I will never ever drink caffeine again - I will not do it to myself again" Until the next time someone offers me one and I feel slightly awkward about saying no... Am I a total wierdo? Does anyone else go through this cycle? I mean, I could understand an alcoholic or a drug addict but it's just coffee. Thing is the mood swings I get when I'm "on" it are so bad - I'm so grumpy nearly all the time. And when I go "cold turkey" it's nearly unbearable. I quit (again) five days ago and I'm starting to feel a lot better today. And by a lot better I mean less depressed. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

I drink tea and cola, not coffee.  When drinking cola, I do usually choose decaffeinated if I can, but eating out that's not always offered.  I usually don't worry about the caffeine content though, as I haven't noticed any difference between when I drink a lot or hardly any.  (Exception; I have found if I avoid caffeine the week before my time of the month, I don't cramp up as much.)    But mood swings or cravings--none.

I'm like Dot: I drink tea or caffeinated drinks. I also can take it or leave it; mostly I use it to help me be more awake at work. If I get enough exercise I don't need caffeine to help keep me awake.

And that one cup mmm... that lovely first cup - it makes me want more cups and before I know it I can't function before that first cup of coffee in the morning, I'm drinking more than half a dozen a day and I'm so jittery I'm biting the heads off anyone who talks to me.

You may not know it, but caffeine is addictive just like a lot of illegal drugs. Both work by elevating dopamine levels in the brain which makes you feel good. The difference is illegal drugs have a much stronger effect.

Am I a total wierdo? Does anyone else go through this cycle?

No, I've done it many times, only with sugar. Sugar does the same kind of thing that caffeine and a lot of illegal drugs: elevates dopamine levels in the brain. The last time I quit sugar was last fall and I felt just fantastic. Then came the holidays and I went to a party and all my resolutions went poof. Ever since then I haven't been able to get back to my sugar free lifestyle.

I quit (again) five days ago and I'm starting to feel a lot better today. And by a lot better I mean less depressed. Does anyone know what I'm talking about?

I remember when I kicked the sugar habit last fall I had so much energy I couldn't remember when I had ever felt so good ever before. I certainly wasn't depressed!

I'm glad you're off caffeine. Now the tough part: learning to say NO the next time someone offers you a cup of coffee. Could you ask for a cup of water or fruit juice instead?

I'm  a bit like Volt...in that I try to give up sugar but come back to it.  - death by chocolate is me!

I enjoy a cup or 2 first thing in the morning..but I don't have any problems with refusing it when offered during the day. I like Pepsi....lemon fizzy stuff minus the sugar. - water is good.

Coffee is addictive to some people...Not me thou'.... I don't think there's too much harm in it  if taken in moderation

Guarana - a herbal tea concoction is replacing coffee these days. Yes...& Other herbal teas  contain caffeine....Tea tea...contains caffeine....cocoa contains caffeine

Oh No......its everywhere, its everywhere...!!

Yeah...its good to try to avoid a food substance if you know that its 'no good' for you

- Good for you Dot!

I need to lay off the sugar....it drags me down!

This is funny don't ta think?

In exchange for obedience, Christianity promises salvation in an afterlife; but in order to elicit obedience through this promise, Christianity must convince people that they need salvation, that there is something to be saved from. Christianity has nothing to offer a happy person living in a natural, intelligible universe. If Christianity is to gain a motivational foothold, it must declare war on earthly pleasure and happiness, and this, historically, has been its precise course of action. In the eyes of Christianity, woman(man) is sinful and helpless in the face of God, and is potential fuel for the flames of hell. Just as Christianity must destroy reason before it can introduce faith, so it must destroy happiness before it can introduce salvation.

I was on the E.G. White diet for about 2-1/2 years, which required total abstinence from caffeinated beverages, and a lot of other things, which I adhered to faithfully.  I went from a plump (220 lbs) to anorexic (almost 130 lbs) in about 8 or 9 months.  Everybody at work thought I had AIDS--heheheheh!!

I was so high on Jayzus at the time, I don't really know if coffee or other caffeinated bevarages are bad for you, 'cause I felt so good, but my knees would get really weak on me sometimes.  I don't think I was gettin' enough protein, since I had almost completely stopped eating animals--and beans.  I don't know why I stopped eating beans...  I guess out of fear that farters can't get into Heaven?  Man, I was so messed up...  One thing is for sure though, if anyone does decide to go vegetarian, or even semi-vegetarian, you will eventually fart much less, and when you do, it won't stink!  Heheheh!     I doubted her at the time, but the girl at the forum I visited so long ago was right!  That was probably 10 years ago...

Coffee, everyday, is probably bad...and so is pecan pie...and even sex.  Oh, I wish I could re-learn the value & virtue of moderation!  I'm doomed!!

Btw, hot & spicy pork skins go really well with french onion dip and cold beer...

Yeah....I love my coffee black & strong so a cup or 2 is enough.

Snakey:

^abLovett, Richard (24 September2005). "Coffee: The demon drink?".New Scientist(2518).

Bloomin' heck snakey - good link. It's a psychoactive substance. It kills insects that feed on the plants. Yikes.

I am going to try very hard to stay off it this time. Maybe everyone else can drink it in moderation but I can't and it makes me sooo ill. Everything seems better when I'm off the caffeine - even my boyfriend seems more attractive. It's true.

Voltaire:

That's a good idea. Everyone has water don't they but they don't always have peppermint tea. It is the feeling that I'm being awkward that makes me say yes to the coffee.

I don't know why I stopped eating beans... I guess out of fear that farters can't get into Heaven?

It's eternal - they can't let farters in - there'd be no end to it!
