I opened this up with a "yes" vote. As a small "l" libertarian, I don't believe that it is the government's role to forbid a private act between two consenting adults.
Where coercion is involved (usually by the pimp), assault and rape charges would apply. Where minors are involved, severe penalties would continue to apply. Street sollicitation would continue to be prohibited, but under city ordinances prohibiting the carrying on of "business" on a public street without a permit.
I had a long discussion a few days back with a gentleman who used to be heavily involved with prostitution (as a client) as well as with one of his "regulars". In their humble opinion, most of the abuse the girls have to deal with stems from the quasi-clandestinity in which they must operate.

Pretty much the same reasons for my yes vote. Anything between consenting adults is out of the province of the state, or should be. Plus, as the European experiments have shown, there is benefit to bringing the illicit industries above ground to be regulated and taxed appropriately. Right now it's easier for kids to buy marijuana and speed than alcohol or cigarettes.
Plus it would put the more violent pimps out of business.

Ever since I started to get more and more interested in human rights and women's issues, this is something I've thought a lot about.
It seems to me like legalizing prostitution would raise the status of women. Now, I know men can sell themselves for money, but it's mostly women that do this. So I figure (and I have no studies to back this up or anything, this is just me here), if it's legal for women to do it, and it's regulated well...then the idea of women having sex outside of marriage wouldn't seem so damning. Men are societally encouraged to have sex outside of marriage, and preferably a good amount. Women, however, are discouraged, both by men AND by other women. Women are especially vicious in condemning those of their own gender. "Every husband wants to be the first, and every wife wants to be the last." (OK, so that's a blanket statement, but I have had many, many college boys tell me honestly that they want to marry a vrigin, and I know for sure that they are NOTHING of the sort...)
So it would seem to me that legalizing prostitution would bring sex maybe more out in the open, and make it possible for women to remove the stigma surrounding their sexual contact. Does this seem logical?

What are the arguments against legalizing prostitution? I can't think of any. Does it basically just come down to personal values and ideas about society's morals?

I voted yes for the same damn reason as everyone else.

Some love is just a lie of the heart
The cold remains of what began with a passionate start
And they may not want it to end
But it will it's just a question of when
I've lived long enough to have learned
The closer you get to the fire the more you get burned
It's hard when you're always afraid
You just recover when another belief is betrayed
So break my heart if you must
It's a matter of trust

Hey, with all these divorces, maybe marriage has failed because of big government. It's essentially a socialistic relationship. Let's let the private sector free market see what it can do? The free market natural divisions of labor at work. Pay for sex from one person. Pay another to cook and clean house. Rent a womb for child bearing. Hire a wet nurse, and babysitter. No arguments. You get tired of one person, you switch.
The benefits of competition! Adam Smith's invisible hand should expand the pie for everybody! Well, mostly for men anyway. The United Way can provide for services for men of lower income.
But the feminists would get a bone thrown to them. Domestic work would finally be accounted for in GDP!

Prostitution, for a few hundred dollars, would allow a homely man to stick his wang into a gorgeous woman who would laugh at him under any other circumstances. I'm all for that. Now that we're on the topic, I'll take three. Tell them to go to the bedroom, strip, and line up on all fours on the bed.

A few hundred dollars???!!! I recently learned that the going rate in Montreal (for independent call girls, not streetwalkers) is not much over CAD$130-$150 an hour. That's about USD$90-$100.

A couple of years back I tried to figure out what a divorce would cost me as a lump sum settlement. After correcting for inflation and the time-value of money, I figured It turned out to be about $30/day. In this case "buying" was cheaper than "renting".
