Indeed, a most pleasant film experience (the most understated sentence in the whole world!! ) I saw the premier on Wednesday night. It was great!
The whole "love story" thing with Aragonn and the elf and Rohan lass as talked about in another thread was not overdone as feared in another thread. I won't be a spoiler for those who have not seen the movie. But, that Helm's Deep battle scene has to be the best "medevial" battle scene I have ever seen done on film.
And was that Gollum a scene stealer or what!!??
Too bad we have to wait a whole year to see the end of this great epic. But, it does give us another exiting year to look forward to.

it really was an incredible film. obviously, folks would have to see the first one to really be able to get into the second one...it's 95% action, after all. but, for the middle of a trilogy, it wasn't too damn shabby at all.
by the way, i actually enjoyed the love tug-of-war going on between aragorn and the two ladies. it was kind of subtle, but nicely done. i can't wait to see how things go in the final movie.

OK, just got back from the movie (why did I take two 11 year olds to see a movie that starts at 10:15 and gets us home at 1:30AM? What kind of father am I?)
Anyway - pretty good. Battle scene was pretty intense. Love angle included, but why not, Arwin & Aragorn did get hooked, didn't they? I didn't get the sense in the books that there was any real passion there anyway. So I think the movie brought that out a bit better.
Yes, no Shelob or breaking of Sauraman's staff (as Drummond mentioned in another thread.) But they had to leave something to fill out the Return of the King, since half of that book was appendix, anyway.
Somehow I was not quite as impressed with this one as the last one. Seemed like the film was in too much of a hurry. The "director's cut" DVD that will undoubtedly be released will take care of that I immagine. And there were quite a few more liberties with the plot, which I found disturbing. Detours with Faramir. No Ents at Helm's Deep. Messed up story with Treebeard, although it came right in the end.
Altogether, though, it was pretty good. The look and feel of the thing was truly Tolkien, as expected. And I will probably see it again and buy the DVD.

I'm with you bhoff. In the first movie, the detours away from Tolkien's source seemed to fill a purpose. In Two Towers, extra-novel material was disconcerting and unnecessary. I really didn't like what they did with Faramir's character. They totally ripped apart his integrity. Having Frodo and Sam end up in Gondor was terribly confusing and didn't add anything to the movie. Because the plot got so far off-track, I lost that sense of urgency about the Ring that was present in the first movie.
That said, there is a lot to like about The Two Towers. Gollum's character was beyond perfect. I understand now why Bilbo took pity on him and why Frodo is downright protective. Frodo sees in Smeagol / Gollum what he could become if the Ring takes hold. This interplay is handled perfectly.
There's also a ton of eye candy with men and elves fighting orcs...and you had to love that scene at the beginning where Gandalf is fighting the Balrog in free fall. Too cool! And the Wargs...wow! How come the normal orcs could come out during the day?
Still, I miss Faramir's character and the story of the Ents the way Tolkien wrote it.
But yes, I will see it again. It was good despite betraying Tolkien's plot a little.

Some love is just a lie of the heart
The cold remains of what began with a passionate start
And they may not want it to end
But it will it's just a question of when
I've lived long enough to have learned
The closer you get to the fire the more you get burned
It's hard when you're always afraid
You just recover when another belief is betrayed
So break my heart if you must
It's a matter of trust
