my new siamese fighting fish:...i have a thing for fishies and, since i stay at my mother-in-law's overnite (due to her health problems), i'd been wanting to get some to put into my room to keep me company. i picked these guys up last night and have them in a double-sided tank made just for bettas...meaning they can see one another but can't get to one another (which would result in much carnage and bloodshed).

I love they way they puff up at each other.  When I was a Freshman in college, my roommate and I had a fighting fish named Samurai.  He would leap partially out of the water to take food from your hand.  He was one cool-ass fish.  Unfortunately, when my roommate took him home she dropped the bowl and ended up with several deep wounds on her fingers from cut glass--all of which required stitches.  Her cat ate the fish, unfortunately.

Some love is just a lie of the heart
The cold remains of what began with a passionate start
And they may not want it to end
But it will it's just a question of when
I've lived long enough to have learned
The closer you get to the fire the more you get burned
It's hard when you're always afraid
You just recover when another belief is betrayed
So break my heart if you must
It's a matter of trust

they were doing that just a moment ago, actually...the darker one (malfoy) is pretty aggressive and i'm glad that the divider goes all the way to the top of the aquarium. otherwise i'm pretty sure he'd jump it and go after his roommate. bettas really are gorgeous when they're threatening each other.

we had an oranda/fantail goldfish named gil once who used to swim to the top of the aquarium and "beg" for food by making smacking noises at us on the top of the water. the aquarium was in our office and he'd swim right over to the side closest to the desk where one of us would be sitting and would do it there.

ouch!!
