OK - let me first say that I need a book written in PLAIN English. I just want to know some of the basics of Buddhism - beliefs, customs, etc, etc. Also, I keep seeing Wiccan, Pagan, and other earth based religions - what are the other earth based religions? Thanks in advance./LM

Hi again...Hope you don't think of me as a smartarse for replying.................(I happen to be experiencing an internet addiction right now)...

My friend used to be a Director of a Buddhist community so I had heaps of lovely convos' with her as well as the opportunity to join in when I liked. One time...when I was experiencing a particularly rough time and felt I really wanted to explore Buddhism a little more seriously...back 6 or so years...I asked her for a few books.

Its really quite hard to recommend books on Buddhism's - as I said.....so many varieties....but anyhow....this is a web site of the same tradition my friend belongs to. http://www.chenrezig.com.au/site/index.html From that link you might be able to surf around and find what you want. Its custom that a student of this tradition of Buddhism is united with a teacher...and then it follows that the 'student' then reads and learns that material. ?

Btw...I decided not tot follow buddhist teaching ...............however I like some of the teachings sometimes called the 'philosophy'. I personally don't agree that its a all encompassing 'philosophy'....but other's might disagree with that.

About the other topics.....perhaps you could use Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religion and go from there.  or this...one http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&defl=en&q=define:Earth+Religion&sa=X&oi=glossary_definition&ct=title

to me "earth based"  is a trendy or new agey term....created to mean 'traditional cultures' such as the Aboriginal & Islander peoples in Australia...indigenous people everywhere basically. I'm indigenous to Poland basically  therefore my roots can be seen as being 'pagan' or 'peasant' - land people.

I'm a bit reluctant to feed people with  a whole bunch of direct hits or links. To me...it feels a bit like direction....that same old christian shit of teaching people what you want them to read or what you think is important........maybe I'm a little too sensitive.....but I don't think I'd like to always be given stuff...without finding out how in the first place. Everyone here seems to use 'Wikipedia'. Its good to find out the tricks of the trade

In exchange for obedience, Christianity promises salvation in an afterlife; but in order to elicit obedience through this promise, Christianity must convince people that they need salvation, that there is something to be saved from. Christianity has nothing to offer a happy person living in a natural, intelligible universe. If Christianity is to gain a motivational foothold, it must declare war on earthly pleasure and happiness, and this, historically, has been its precise course of action. In the eyes of Christianity, woman(man) is sinful and helpless in the face of God, and is potential fuel for the flames of hell. Just as Christianity must destroy reason before it can introduce faith, so it must destroy happiness before it can introduce salvation.

Snakechic - good morning!

We must be experiencing the same addiction at the moment.

Thanks for the advice.  I have hit Wikipedia a few times in my searches, so will continue to do so.  I think it is the principles of Buddhism, like you mentioned, more than Buddhism itself.

And, no, I don't think you're a smartarse!  Besides, I have already learned that even if the board is completely deserted, I can count on you to be here pretty soon and have something helpful to say!  lol

Albert Einstein: "A human being is a part of the whole, called by us "Universe" a part limited in time and space. He experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest--a kind of optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and affection for a few persons nearest us."
