I have gathered the links to the (at least) three web designs put forward thus far by Brake, Foxmaiden, and myself. ALso there is a link to the old original (no defunct) WA site. We need not consider this a popularity contest. I certainly will not be hurt if I am not chosen. Let's think of these three designs as possiblities for a final outcome.Let's choose the best characteristics from all three... and maybe come up with some more. Change mine to:

The first one had layout issues that were fixed in my third try.

Brake, as far as updates goes (I'm just talking content for the moment), would it be a matter of sending YOU some text in a word doc and YOU put it on the server?  Could you give anyone else access to the server?

This, of course, will all turn on exactly WHERE the final site is.  Maybe the answer will just have to wait for that anyway.  BTW, what web editor are you using.. or are you just straight coding HTML?

I should be able to create some FTP access to that part of the site without giving access to everything. Or it can be sent to me and I'll make sure that it's formatted correctly.

For editing, I mostly use Quanta if I'm on my Linux box, or just simple Notepad if I'm forced to use Windows. I've tried the WYSIWYG editors and they never produced what I wanted. Plus, there are very few WYSIWYG editors that do a good job with CSS.

Since you're updating the color scheme, I have a single style sheet controlling the colors. It'll be a quick change to make the site match the forum look.

Changed the colors to match the forum. Not sure if I like it, but I didn't like the other color scheme when I started.

Let's choose the best characteristics from all three...

Ok, as an official member of the team, here are my thoughts:

I like the cloud background on St Thomas' version - it reinforces the notion that the spiritual and eternal can still be a part of our lives - without the stifiling dogmatism and control.

I like the "front and center" recovering or reclaiming aspects of Foxmaiden's design, but her entry page is too long and cumbersome. There must be some way (perhaps a pull-down list with hover feature?) to get the full set of topics under "resources" onto a single page without scroll-down.

Brakethepoet's design strikes me as a bit sterile (sorry, Brake!). Nothing intriguing to "hook" the viewer. Instead of the old picture of the girl/woman walking away, perhaps Lot leaving Sodom might be more appropriate.

Overall, I think we ought to emphasise leaving Fundamentalism - not leaving Christianity. Fundamentalists often confuse the two as the same thing and that atheism is the alternative (which it is not).

Another idea for a topic might be a "What to Expect" section including some "testamony" from former walk aways that end with hopeful messages about what  positive results  possible from walking away.

Anyway, these are my thoughts.

Ben

Thanks for the comments, Ben.  Sounds like a good start anyway.  I could live with that for a start. Any othe comments out there?

Brake, I've been using Netscape composer since I use it to teach web page production here at the College (its free and easy).  It is certainly not the best, but it works for most of my needs.  Anyway, is there a problem sending you files coded with Composer?  If we finally agree on a look (for a start anyway), I'm thinking that you could create it, publish it, and  offer a template for others to use for submitting content.  Or at least folks could submit content via Word or something.

If you will allow me to give you the awesome responsibility, I'm going to let YOU produce a rough draft of the site using your know-how and the ideas submitted in this (and related) thread(s).

Go ahead and put it up and let's have a look.  When I said that I 'd like to have something up by the 12th, my plan was to put something up on my server the same way.  But,  since you probably have greater expertise anyway (and I am assuming much more time than I do at the moment -an assumption that may be wrong perhaps),  I'm giving you the ball.  Run, Brake, Run.

St Thomas:

OK. I'll run with it.

If most of what's being submitted is articles or links, there really isn't much anyone else will need to do. For the moment, at least. I can format pretty easily as long as the articles are divided into paragraphs and any links are in place. Probably the best format to use is a simple text file, although I'm confident I can work with anything.

I'll see what I can have done by Friday.

Bhoff:

Yeah, I know it's pretty sterile. The bulk of my experience is in writing ugly yet profitable pages/sites to rank high in search engines, so it's difficult sometimes to switch over to making pretty sites.

Hi fellow committee members.  I've been away for a few months, sorry to miss the action.

I want to clarify about my "web design" -- initially all I was trying to do was make a page of links.  I ended up collection sooo many links that I tried organizing them by category.  I never thought of that page as the "site" or even as a design, just a beginning at collating some links.  I have collected more links since then, but haven't had time to slot them into place.

I really have no experience designing or managing websites and probably don't have much time to devote to it either.  I like Ben's idea of having pull-down menus, but have no idea how that is done.

I could contribute a list of the links I have collected -- in the categories I created or not and in the format I put them in, or just a straight list that could be formatted however seems good.

Thanks, Foxmaiden, I look forward to getting more of the good info that you have provided.  Please keep checking back here.  We are going to need all the help we can get.

Brake, what is your estimate of when you can have a web site up and operational?
